About Marie

I want to make science come alive for anyone who would otherwise see it as a tepid body of facts
— Marie Siegenthaler, Statement of Purpose, Science Illustration Program at CSUMB

Marie was born an artist, always viewing the world through her own unique lens. She was an observer and recorder her entire life, keeping sketch books in her tiny cramped hand as though the page could not contain all of her thoughts, observations and sketches. Her interest in the interlocking systems of nature and the narratives they produce manifested itself at an early age. Rather than dolls, Marie immersed herself in the world of bugs, rocks and seashells.

This passion was encouraged and nurtured in high school by her mentor and teacher, Sue Fox and the SEA-Disc Academy at Drake High School. Marie attended Saint Johns College in Santa Fe, a “Great Books” school which allowed her to explore the works of such pioneer scientists as Harvey, Darwin and Lavoiser, sketching and diagramming everything that crossed her lab bench. Marie continued to develop her skills in drawing and painting, exploring a wide variety of mediums. We were delighted when she told us of her interest in pursuing a career in Science Illustration, a pursuit that would include her love of science and her passion for drawing. Marie was accepted into the Science Illustration Certificate program at CSU Monterey Bay, but she did not live to know it. Marie was killed while riding her motorcycle by a hit and run driver in March of 2018. The world is a much dimmer place without her.
