Why We Got Started

Tentacles & Wings was created to honor Marie’s life and memory, and to provide assistance to other passionate and creative artists who wish to educate and change the world through their art. Marie wanted to bring science alive through her illustrations. She was in the habit of carrying sketch books with her at all times and would constantly draw things that caught her eye. We wish to encourage and support other aspiring artists to help us see the world in a new way. Marie’s passion for drawing comes from the same place as her love for literature, science, philosophy, and world religions. All are rooted in a sense of wonder for the world. Her heroes were those who took the time to stop, consider, and engage with the world around them.

A word about our mascot: Marie had a deep fascination and love for all things tentacled that live in the sea. She found beauty in winged creatures, studying wing and feather structure for hours on end. The winged nautilus combines these two loves in a way that we know would have delighted her. Marie had a beloved nautilus hand puppet named “Captain Nemo” that would sometimes answer customer questions or entertain coworkers at the local natural food store where she worked. Captain Nemo served as the model and inspiration for our mascot. Students of nautilus anatomy will no doubt have spotted that Captain Nemo’s wings are backwards, as a nautilus propels itself forward by pushing water out of its siphon. We hope that you’ll indulge our whimsy here for the sake of fantasy; after all, wouldn’t it be great to propel yourself forward and be able to fly backwards?
