Beginning as a fascination with stingrays and doodling as a child, I knew nature and art would be important pieces in my life, no matter where I went. Books, magazines, and documentaries sparked a passion and curiosity in me for the marine world; a place so seemingly out of reach to 7-year-old me in my small Illinois town. This inspiration carried me through high school and ultimately led me to pursue a B.S. in Marine Science and minor in Illustration at Jacksonville University in Florida. It was there as the only student in my graduating class in science and art, I noticed the challenge of science communication and the potential for illustration to aid in that endeavor.

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” truly is the core of what I strive to accomplish with my work and what I hope to cultivate more in CSUMB’s Science Illustration Program. When it comes to science, the challenge lies in convincing those outside of the field why they should care at all about the research being done and the strides being made to learn about and protect the world we inhabit. And I love that challenge! Like the artists whose works sparked my love for the natural world during childhood, I hope to do the same so people both now and in the future can be inspired to appreciate and protect this “Blue Marble” we all call home.
