Permanent Collection of Marie's Art Installed at St. John's College

On May 6, 2022 a reception was held commemorating a permanent installation of Marie’s art at St. John’s College in Santa Fe. St. John’s is Marie’s alma mater, where she earned her under graduate degree. The collection was installed in the Evans Science Lab building and was the culmination of three years of work by several of Marie’s tutors and other faculty, most notably Llyd Wells.

Several people offered remarks including the dean of the college, Walter J. Sterling; “Marie's senior essay on the Mahabharata explored deeply and wrestled with the power of story and storytelling. Her closing pages express how despite tragedy, death, or loss, a story can transcend and reach for and create new, perhaps healing, possibilities beyond the finite. I see in Marie’s works the continuation of Marie's story and legacy, extended into the future here at our college, in a wondrous way.”

Of Marie and her work Mr. Llyd observed the following, “Marie was in the first mathematics class that I taught here at St. John’s. She stood out for her creativity and her high personal standards. She liked to follow her own path and she often led the class to insights that we might have missed without her. Marie’s art shows us what was always there, if only we look closely enough. I think Marie’s art will serve as an inspiration to others, to push them to look closer, look harder and look anew.”

We were deeply touched by the words of everyone at St. John’s and very grateful that Marie’s art and legacy will continue to be remembered and celebrated for many years to come. We would like to extend a special
thank- you to Llyd Wells, Melissa Latham-Stevens, Kathleen Longwaters, and Erika Martinez for their vision and tenacity in seeing this project to fruition.
